The Hidden Wealth of Domestic Work
How valuable is your time? Hopefully, more precious than gold whether you have a high paying job or not. And yet, one of the most undervalued contributors to household wealth is domestic work—the unpaid labour that keeps families running, children thriving, and communities connected.
According to the International Labour Organization, over 16 billion hours of unpaid care work are performed daily, most of it by women and girls. If compensated at minimum wage, this work would be worth over $11 trillion annually, or 9% of global GDP. In the UK, estimates suggest the value of domestic labour can exceed £35,000 per year, depending on the household’s needs and care responsibilities.
In my book Compass Star: Your PATH to True Wealth, I propose running your household like a business. That means recognizing domestic work not as invisible effort, but as economic contribution—one that reduces expenses, increases wellbeing, and builds long-term wealth.
Let’s look at domestic work through the lens of the Compass Star PATH:
- Passion: Many caregivers and homemakers pour love into their work—whether it’s preparing meals, nurturing children, or creating a peaceful home. This is work rooted in purpose, not just obligation.
- Abundance: Domestic work replaces paid services—childcare, cleaning, cooking, elder care. If you had to outsource these tasks, the costs would be significant. By doing them yourself or within your family, you’re preserving wealth.
- Time: Running a household efficiently requires skill. From meal planning to managing schedules, domestic work is time optimization in action. It’s not just busywork; it’s strategic.
- Health: A well-run home supports physical and emotional wellbeing. Clean spaces, nutritious meals, and emotional care all contribute to a healthier life; often more than a gym membership or wellness retreat.
So why is this work so often overlooked?
Because it is unpaid, because it is traditionally gendered and because it happens behind closed doors. But when we begin to value domestic work as part of our total wealth, we can shift our narrative; from sacrifice to strategy, from invisibility to empowerment.
If you’re the lower-income or non-income earner in your household, your contribution is not secondary. It’s foundational. And if you are the higher-income earner, recognizing and honouring this work is part of building true wealth together.
Your Compass Star always points to what matters most. And domestic work? It is a vital part of the PATH to true wealth.
