What is Luxury? A PATH to True Wealth
When we hear the word luxury, most of us picture something shiny or over indulgent: designer handbags, Swiss watches, leather seats in a private anything, maybe a sleek car gliding down a coastal road, or the image of wearing a pampered white robe with matching slippers while others dote on your every desire. Society has long defined luxury as something expensive, exclusive, and often material. But what if luxury isn’t just about price tags and prestige? What if it’s about how deeply something enriches your life? I have been seeing a lot of discussion around luxury products, now being mass distributed, so I thought we could discuss this.
In the world of personal finance, we often focus on budgeting, saving, and investing. Yes, these are very important but there’s another layer to wealth—one that’s less about accumulation and more about elevation. I call it PATH in my Compass Star model: Passion, Abundance, Time, and Health. These four pillars shape our total wealth, and they also help us redefine what luxury truly means.
Let’s start with the traditional view. Luxury has historically been a symbol of status. Owning rare art, couture fashion, or a high-end home has signalled your success and exclusivity. These items can be beautiful and meaningful, no doubt. But I would argue they are not the only way to experience luxury.
Luxury, at its core, is anything that significantly enhances your quality of life. It doesn’t have to cost a fortune—but it can be priceless. Think about the feeling of waking up after a full night of uninterrupted sleep (especially for any new parent; now that’s luxurious). Or taking a slow hike through beautiful woodlands, breathing in fresh air and feeling grounded (my current favourite). Or celebrating a milestone birthday with people who truly know and love you. These moments don’t come with receipts, but they’re rich in every sense of the word.
As we grow, our definition of luxury evolves. In our twenties, it might be travel and adventure. In our forties, it could be time—time to rest, time to create, time to be with family. Later in life, good health becomes the ultimate luxury. And throughout it all, passion—the ability to pursue what lights you up—is a luxury that fuels the rest.
So how do we build a life of luxury through PATH?
- Passion: Invest in what excites you. Whether it’s painting, mentoring, writing, or building a business, passion is a luxury that energizes your spirit.
- Abundance: This isn’t just financial abundance—it’s emotional, relational, and spiritual. Cultivate gratitude and generosity.
- Time: Guard it fiercely. Your time is precious. Luxury is having the freedom to choose how you spend your hours.
- Health: Prioritize it. A strong body and clear mind are the foundation of every other luxury.
Luxury isn’t one-size-fits-all. It’s deeply personal. And when you define it on your own terms, it becomes a compass—not just for spending, but for living.
It is your most indulgent luxury currently?
